In 1952, James and Margaret Clifton purchased the property where the The Virginia Cliffe Inn currently resides to build their family home. On the property was a farmhouse which was over 100 years old and a landmark on Mountain Road since 1896. James, who was a general contractor, built his family home by dismantling the farmhouse and reclaiming its materials to fashion the current structure modeled after George Washington’s military headquarters in Newburgh, N.Y.
The Virginia Cliffe Inn affronts Mountain Road in historic Glen Allen. Mountain Road received its name because it once was the main road from Richmond to the mountains of Virginia. Mountain Road is known as the second oldest road in the nation and was regularly used by Governor Thomas Jefferson as he traveled between Richmond and Monticello.
After raising their four children, Margaret and James Clifton opened their Georgian-style home as a Bed and Breakfast in 1998.
