Former ACC Hurdle Champion creates an event that will Focus Our Future

Richmond, VA – January 4, 2019– Focus Our Future Inc., a Non-Profit organization that helps athletes prepare for life after sport, will be holding a networking event designed to connect active student-athletes with working professionals. This event is part of a program called the Focus Our Future® Program. The program focuses on developing personal competencies, professional relationships, and leadership skills at a free, fun dinner-style networking event to increase the employability of the student-athletes in attendance. The goal of the program is to Network, Interview and Employ the student-athletes enrolled.

Kevin Watson, founder of Focus Our Future Inc., announced that the Focus Our Future ® Program networking event will take place at the Deep Run Recreation Center on February 6, 2019. As a former collegiate athlete and working professional with a Master’s degree in Public Leadership, Kevin Watson’s goal is to educate student-athletes about prospective careers so that they can positively impact their respective communities around the world after sport. At the event, student-athletes get the opportunity to learn about prospective careers, meet potential employers and learn valuable information all while playing games and eating a great meal at a professional event. Student-athletes from Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond, VA will attend this event along with representatives from industries such as Computer Science, Physical Therapy, Marketing and more. This event is made possible because Focus Our Future Inc. has partnered with businesses such as Every Little Detail, wedding and event planning, and One Source, the background check company. Focus Our Future Inc. values the support of the B.E.S.T members of our community. These members are individual contributors and sponsors such as Dick’s Sporting Goods, Short Pump Nutrition Corner and others who make it possible for all invited guests to attend for free.

Kevin became inspired to support student-athletes with employment after being challenged by a fellow Track and Field coach back in 2013. As a result, Kevin, a former ACC Champion at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, decided to create the first event giving student athletes from his alma mater Henrico High School in Richmond, VA and Lee Davis High School in Mechanicsville, VA the opportunity to connect with working professionals in their communities. Kevin understands the difficulties of networking for employment and searching for a job while actively participating in a sport as a student-athlete. Juggling classes, studying and practices can be more than challenging by itself. When trying to pursue a career after sport is added into the mix, things can become extremely difficult and most student-athletes could benefit from assistance. In today’s economy, people need jobs. And not all athletes will become gainfully employed as a professional athlete. What better way to jump start a student-athlete’s career after sport than to address this need while they are in school? Then after they finish participating in their respective sport, they are more prepared to step into the workforce.
